Technical Tour: Environmental Fluid Mechanics Laboratory (EFML) at Colorado State University
Tuesday, June 27, 2023 | 10:30 am - 12:00 pm
FREE
.5 PDHs
This is a walking tour of the Environmental Fluid Mechanics Laboratory (EFML) at the Colorado State University. It is free for anyone to attend.
The Environmental Fluid Mechanics Laboratory (EFML) is housed within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Colorado State University. The research focus in on fundamental and complex fluid dynamics problems with broad applications in engineering, oceanography and atmospheric science. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation tools are used in conjunction with theoretical analysis and experimental methods (as well as collaborative research with field observationalists) to study turbulent flows in both natural and engineered systems. The emphasis is on fundamental understanding of fluid flow processes in order to develop improved models for turbulent flows.
Technical Tour: Bellvue Hydraulic Irrigation Laboratory and Hydraulics Laboratory - Engineering Research Center (ERC) at Colorado State University (ticketed event)
Wednesday, June 28, 2023 | 12:45 pm – 5:00 pm
$35 ADV | $35 ONS
3.5 PDHs
This bus tour will first visit the historic Bellvue Hydraulic Irrigation Laboratory before continuing to the Hydraulics Laboratory - Engineering Research Center (ERC) at Colorado State University.
Colorado State University’s Hydraulics Laboratory is part of CSU’s Engineering Research Center at the Foothills Research Campus located in beautiful Northern Colorado. The facility is unique with its proximity and water supply from Horsetooth Reservoir, allowing for large, sustained flow rates. CSU has long been a leader in hydraulic modeling and overtopping performance testing with world renowned faculty calling CSU home.
A little over 100 years ago, Ralph Parshall established the Bellvue Hydraulic Irrigation Laboratory a few miles northwest of Fort Collins on the Cache la Poudre River. Parshall, working for the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) research unit at Colorado State University at the time, developed the first accurate flow measuring flume along with other instruments. We will tour this historic facility where the Parshall flume, now used at field sites throughout the world, was first tested. Dr. Tom Trout, formerly with the USDA Agricultural Research Service in Fort Collins, will be our host.
Technical Tour: Chimney Hollow Reservoir Project Tour, Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park (ticketed event)
Thursday, June 29, 2023 | 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
$80 ADV | $80 ONS
2.0 PDHs
Only 23 miles southwest of the conference site at Colorado State University lies the impressive Chimney Hollow Reservoir Project. Here in the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies is the construction site for a 90,000 ac-ft reservoir behind a 350-ft high asphalt core dam. We will be provided an “inside tour” of the $600 million project, scheduled for completion in 2025, by CSU alumnus Joe Donnelly, the Project Engineer.
Afterward, we will travel 30 miles deeper into the mountains to the breathtaking Rocky Mountain National Park. Time permitting, we will stop in the quaint and beautifully situated Estes Park on our way back to Fort Collins. Good walking shoes are recommended for this tour.
